1 word to describe the JID : GREAT.

Last but not least, our favourite dish of all, the 'kam cheong' fish in tomyam...

*sorry, i can't help myself but to post this up..taste too good not to share!*

Visit to the SMK Gunung Rapat Gavel Club

Some of Division S Council members were in Ipoh for SMK Gunung Rapat Gavel Club's Speechcraft programme on 15th August 2009.

Lead by Division S Governor, SH Lim, Asst. Division Governor (Education & Training) Johnson Tang, Asst Division Governor (Marketing) Christopher Choong and Division Webmaster Joanne Tan went for an adventure, greatly shared with the members of the Gavel Club.

The Speechcraft programme was an eye opener, the members of SMK Gunung Rapat really amazed us with their effort, their enthusiasm and their willingness to learn. In fact, they strived brilliantly as a representative of Toastmasters!

The programme, which was organized by Pak Peter, was a great effort that shows the students are indeed an avid fan of Toastmasters programme. We were presented "Ten Behaviours of An Effective Evaluator" by DTM Peter Ng and followed by a row of speech presentation and evaluations by the students themselves.

Just a sharing :
1. Show that you care
2. Suit your evaluation to the speaker
3. Learn the speaker's objectives
4. Listen actively
5. Personalize your language
6. Give positive reinforcement
7. Help the speaker become motivated
8. Evaluate the behavior - not the person
9. Nourish self esteem
10. Show the speaker how to improve

It was amazing to see how fast the Gavel Club members put their lesson into practice as they take turn to evaluate their friends, both as an assignment speaker as well as an evaluator.

Here's some of the actions :)

KEEP UP THE GREAT JOB SMK GUNUNG RAPAT GAVEL CLUB!!

Australian Sister School Visit to SMK Gunung Rapat Gavel Club

Contribution by : Members of SMK Gunung Rapat Gavel club ( Junior Toastmasters club)

SMK Gunung Rapat was proud to host a group of 8 students from its Australian sister school that came on a study tour to Malaysia. The study tour compromising a total of 8 students and 3 of their teachers were exposed to the Malaysia Education system from 24th to 26th of June 2009. On the day of their arrival, they were briefed by our head boy and then taken for a tour of the school. The Australians were lucky enough as they had a chance to participate in various activities that were carried out in conjunction with the PPSMI week. They also attended the Gavel Club meeting. It was a very good opportunity for the Australians to share their experience in Malaysia in this public speaking oriented club meeting. They had a great time during the meeting.

On the second day, the Australians were placed in few upper form classes. As such, they had the chance to get familiar with the students. They were also exposed to Malaysian customs and traditions. They enjoyed meeting new people and making new friends. A special trip to Gua Tempurung and the introduction to Malaysian traditional games such as congkak, teng-teng, batu seremban and sepak raga fascinated them. The school boarders entertained and guided the Australians about these games. They especially enjoyed learning sepak takraw and even promised to promote the game to their friends and family back in Australia.

On Friday, SMKGR’s Arts and Visual Club organized a batik workshop, a very famous local art. The Australians enjoyed themselves immensely during this activity and got to take their creations back home. They even shared their ideas on arts with our students. It was indeed a great and splendid experience for the Australians. The school threw a farewell party for the Australians on the last night of their visit.

The Australians joined boarders for dinner and the performances. The Australians even performed and sang a few local songs such as “Rasa Sayang” and many other wonderful rhymes and so on. It was indeed a special experience for them as they can practise their Bahasa Indonesia with us Malaysians. Before the party ended, all of them took pictures of each other to be kept as remembrance. On Saturday, the final day of the study tour as well as a school day for SMKGR, representatives from the Rosebud Secondary College went on stage during our assembly and bid us farewell before leaving for Penang.

It was a very memorable event for all SMKGRians. On the whole, the study tour from Rosebud Secondary College was a total success. Because of the H1N1 virus scare the school management requested the Australians to abide to some safety measures in order to prevent infections. SMKGRians had a great time interacting with the Australians. The very “friendly” nature of Malaysians made the Australians felt comfortable and were like home during their stay here. To ensure a more sustained relationship with our sister school, SMKGR is making plans to visit our sister school in March next year. We hope that we will be able to achieve our plans………..Go SMKGR !!!!

Division S Club Coach and Mentor Programme

The vision of having a sharing session and getting Club Coach and Mentor started from the moment I held the role as Area Governor in 2007/2008.

I was assigned 4 clubs which have mixture of clubs within and below chartered strength.
As fresh as I am with the newly elected club officers, we had some difficulties in getting help.
I often stumbled into these two questions: - What to help? How to help?

Even if we have found some passionate Toastmasters members from another club, they will be still asking the same questions.
Since then, I understood that to have a strong Club, Area, Division and District, we need a team of Club Coaches, Club Mentors and Members Mentors to really understand and ready to assist when help is needed.

Since then, planning has been put into the vision and finally, we had our first Club Coach and Mentor Program (CCMP) at Penang Hill in a two-days-one-night session. The session was meticulously crafted to suit participants from different levels of Toastmasters knowledge.

49 participants signed up for the program within two weeks.

We started at 3.00pm after checking into our heritage hotel – The Bellevue Hotel, Penang Hill occupying the entire hotel’s 11 rooms. Additional mattresses were layout and welcomed us with great joy.
By 4.00pm, we kicked off our program with a teambuilding session organized by Joanne Tan and Terence Lee. Three games were planned and had the essence of Ice Breaker, Team Work and Fun & Wet.

By 8.00pm, we kicked off our 2.5 hours educational session with the “what” concept.
Started with the basics of Toastmasters’ club officer’s roles, Distinguished Club Program, Successful club, Club Coaches and Mentors significance and tools available to identify the club’s strength.
The next morning, we continued with the “how” concept the facilitators then use the Club Coach Troubleshooting guide and other medias to help the participants understand and get the root cause of the club.
Moments of Truth session was also conducted to help the participants learn how to conduct one at the club they will be assigned to.

Both education sessions were facilitated by great leaders from Division N & S Governors alike:
· Past Division N Governor 2005/06: Clement Pang, DTM
· Chartered Division S Governor 2006/07: Sue Chan, DTM
· Past Division S Governor 2007/08: Yoon Peng Yew, ACG, ALB
· Immediate Past Division S Governor 2008/09: Charles Tan, DTM
· Elected Division S Governor 2009/10: SH Lim, ACS, ALB
· Immediate Past Area Governor 2007/08: Thiang Bee Nee, ACS, ALB

Sue Chan, DTM summarized the session with a great game of building bridges along with the rest of facilitators acting as natural disasters to the working groups.

Finally, we have a closing message from a guest speaker, Billy Teoh, CC with his title “Finish it STRONG” which inspires the participants to finish their journey strong and help others in their journey too.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the distinguished facilitators who had spend their precious time to make this event successful.
Surely, this educational session is not possible without a great team of members to help plan and execute the event flawlessly.
· Co-Organizing Chair: Eleanor Ooi
· Program Manager: Jessica Ho
· Program Material Manager: Teoh Pei Yin
· Facility Managers: Muthukumaran and Lee Yew Jin
· Team building Managers: Joanne Tan & Terence Lee

I would like to thank our Club Coach Chair (northern region), Ricky Ch’ng, ACS, CL for the full support and gracing our program.

This is my fourth year in Toastmasters and I had gained so much of knowledge in communication and leadership. Toastmasters have helped me in my skills, career and life. Hence it’s always kind of us to share the “gift of toastmasters” to our friends and colleagues – Sharing is Caring!

This program started as a vision I had two years ago but today, it’s no longer an individual’s vision. It’s a vision of all passionate Toastmasters who cares and wishes to share the “Gift of Toastmasters”.
You are better than whom you think you are, start sharing your experience and help your friends succeed.

From the Desk of : Division S Governor 2009/2010

I started this wonderful journey when i was first introduced by my wonderful neighbour, Andy Lim from Farlim Toastmasters Club. At first, Toastmasters was merely just to past my time, but little did I know, I grew so fond, attached and enthusiast to all those wonderful words of bonding you could think of, with this great organization, Toastmasters International.

Taking over the position of Division S Governor, has indeed make me realized how much I've 'grown' attached to Toastmasters. It has become a part of my life now, and I still continue to go 'clubbing' almost every other day.

This term has a meaningful target, an aim, a vision…As we were all geared up for another President Distinguished District, allow me to share the vision of working towards our DCP Goals by April 2010. It has proved an easy task, with leadership and cooperation amongst members, clubs, areas, and divisions. Through experience shared by many leaders in Toastmasters, it is
only possible if we held our hands and walk together to another great finishing line, finishing it, STRONG!

As all the Division Council members has pledged to served unconditionally, at any time (and yes, i mean, ANYTIME, as in 24/7), I urge members of Division S to work together and please do not hesitate to ask, to offer and to help one another throughout your journey as a Toastmasters International member.

Let us all Speak our Way To Magical Transformation!
